Currency Converter
Convert between world currencies using live exchange rates from the European Central Bank.
How It Works
The Currency Converter performs live conversions between every major and minor world currency using daily exchange rates fetched once per session from a public rates feed. Pick the source and target currencies from the dropdowns, type an amount, and the converted value appears instantly. Standard ISO 4217 codes are used (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, INR, BRL, etc.), and currencies are listed alphabetically by name with their code shown alongside, so you can find what you need quickly. Rates are mid-market (the midpoint between bid and ask), which is what financial-data providers publish — actual amounts you receive at a bank or card terminal will include a margin on top of this. The conversion math is plain decimal arithmetic, performed in your browser; no amounts are sent to a server. The rate source is queried only once per page load, so subsequent conversions during the same session use the cached rate. For occasional travellers and shoppers comparing prices in foreign currencies, this is the same number you would get from a search-engine convert query, with no tracking and no clutter.
Use Cases
- Converting prices while shopping internationally
- Checking exchange rates before a foreign trip
- Comparing salaries or costs quoted in different currencies
- Converting invoice amounts for accounting purposes
Frequently Asked Questions
- Are these rates real-time?
- They are daily mid-market rates updated once per page load from a public feed. For currencies that move quickly during the day, the rate may lag a few hours.
- Are the rates the same as what I would get at the bank?
- No — banks add a spread (often 1–4%) on top of the mid-market rate, so you receive less than this number when converting cash. The mid-market rate is the right reference for comparison shopping.
- Which currencies are supported?
- The major fiat currencies and most national currencies are supported. Some highly volatile or pegged currencies (e.g. some emerging-market or restricted currencies) may have less reliable rates.
- Are my conversion amounts sent anywhere?
- The only network call is fetching the daily rates; the amounts you type are processed locally and never leave your device.
- Does it support cryptocurrencies?
- No, only fiat currencies. For crypto, use a dedicated exchange tracker which has higher-frequency price feeds.
